Saunas explained

How long should you stay in a sauna?

Ten to twenty minutes is the standard answer and it is a reasonable one. But the more useful instruction is that you should leave when you want to leave, rather than holding out because a timer or a friend says you have not done enough.

There is also a local adjustment. In a Dubai summer most people arrive at a sauna already closer to dehydrated than they would be in a cooler country, and that shortens the comfortable session noticeably.

A sensible session length

Ten to twenty minutes for most people at 80 to 90°C. Beginners should start at five to ten and judge by how they feel an hour afterwards rather than during.

Heat tolerance genuinely builds over a few weeks. The session that feels long in week one often feels short by week four, and that is a normal adaptation rather than a sign you should be pushing.

Rounds beat endurance

Two or three rounds of ten to fifteen minutes, with a cold shower or plunge and a real rest between, does more than one long stretch. The contrast is where most of the effect people describe comes from.

Rest until your heart rate and breathing settle before going back in. That gap is part of the process, not an interruption to it. Five minutes sitting down is typical.

Upper bench or lower

Heat stratifies. The upper bench can be 15 to 20°C hotter than the lower one in the same cabin, which is why the same twenty minutes feels very different depending on where you sat.

If a session feels too intense, move down before you shorten it. Beginners are often better on the lower bench for the first few weeks.

The signs to get out now

Dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, a headache starting, tingling in the hands, or suddenly feeling cold. Any of those means leave, sit somewhere cool and drink.

Do not push through them. The specific scenario to avoid is fainting inside a hot cabin, which is why sauna doors open outward and never lock.

Hydration in this climate

Drink before, not only after. A twenty minute session produces half a kilo to a kilo of sweat, and if you were already low you will feel it.

If you are doing several rounds regularly, some people prefer something with electrolytes, since salt goes with the water.

Never after alcohol. It is the single most dangerous combination in heat bathing and it is behind most serious incidents.

Who should keep it shorter

Older adults, anyone new to it, anyone with low blood pressure, and anyone on medication affecting blood pressure or fluid balance.

Children need much shorter sessions, the lower bench, and supervision. They dehydrate faster than adults and are less likely to say when they feel unwell.

Anyone with a heart condition or who is pregnant should ask a doctor before making it a routine.

The room affects the session

A cabin with correct ventilation heats evenly, which is what makes fifteen minutes on the lower bench pleasant rather than lukewarm. Sauna room installation covers how that is achieved.

Sauna heaters and stones need replacing periodically, and packed stones are a common reason a cabin stops feeling right. Cold plunge pools shorten what you want from each round. We do sauna and steam room installation across Dubai.

Questions we get asked most

How long should a sauna session be?

Ten to twenty minutes for most people at 80 to 90°C. Beginners should start at five to ten minutes. Leave when you want to rather than holding out to a target.

Is it better to do one long sauna or several short ones?

Several. Two or three rounds of ten to fifteen minutes with a cold shower and a proper rest between beats one long session, and the contrast is where most of the effect comes from.

Why does the upper bench feel so much hotter?

Because heat stratifies. The upper bench can be 15 to 20°C hotter than the lower one in the same cabin. Moving down is a better first response than cutting the session short.

Can you use a sauna every day?

Most healthy adults can. The cardiovascular associations in the research were strongest at four or more sessions a week. Hydration matters more here than in cooler climates.
