Steam shower installation in Dubai

A steam shower is a normal shower enclosure that has been sealed, given a ceiling, and connected to a steam generator. Because the drain, the falls and usually the waterproofing already exist, it is by a distance the cheapest way into wet heat — typically half the cost of building a dedicated steam room.

The catch is that most existing enclosures were never designed to hold steam. An open top lets it escape in seconds, a standard shower door leaks at every edge, and the surrounding plasterboard was never specified for saturated air. Converting properly means addressing all three, not just plumbing in a generator.

What the build involves

Sealing the enclosure

The enclosure needs a ceiling, a full-perimeter door seal and a sealed threshold. Steam finds any gap. We usually replace the existing door with a purpose-made steam door — magnetic full-height seal, sweep at the base, opening outward — because retrofitting seals to a standard shower door rarely holds for long.

Checking the existing waterproofing

We open a section and inspect. Bathrooms built to a normal shower specification often have tanking behind the tiles only to shoulder height, which is fine for a shower and inadequate for steam, since saturated air reaches the ceiling. Where the existing membrane falls short we extend it, which means removing and re-laying tile in that zone.

Generator sizing for a small volume

A steam shower is a small box, typically 2.5 to 4 cubic metres, so a 4.5 to 7kW generator is usually right. The common mistake is fitting a domestic unit rated for a larger room, which then short-cycles and wears its element out early. Sizing down correctly matters as much as sizing up.

Ceiling fall and seat

Even in a small enclosure the ceiling needs a fall, for exactly the same reason a full steam room does. If there is space, a fold-down or tiled bench transforms the experience — standing for fifteen minutes in steam is not relaxing, and most people who skip the seat regret it.

The single variable that decides where you land is the condition of the existing waterproofing. If the tanking is full height and sound, a conversion is genuinely cheap. If it stops at shoulder height, tiles come off and the price roughly doubles. We establish which it is by opening one small section at survey, before quoting.

If you are already renovating the bathroom, the incremental cost of doing this properly is small. Retrofitting into a finished bathroom two years later costs considerably more.

Questions we get asked most

How much does a steam shower cost in Dubai?

A straightforward conversion of a sound existing enclosure runs AED 22,000 to 32,000. If the waterproofing needs extending, AED 32,000 to 45,000. A conversion including new glass, a bench and controls reaches AED 58,000.

Can any shower be converted to a steam shower?

Most can, but three things need checking: whether the enclosure can be sealed at the top, whether the existing tanking runs full height, and whether there is a route for the steam line from the generator. Enclosures with open tops or partial screens are the hardest cases.

Where does the steam generator go?

In a ventilated cupboard, under a vanity or in an adjacent service void, within about 10 metres of the enclosure. It needs a water feed, a drain for the flush cycle and access for descaling. Burying it somewhere unreachable is a decision people regret at the first service.

How long does a steam shower conversion take?

Four to eight weeks depending on whether tiling work is needed. A conversion with no tile removal can be done in about a week of site time, spread across the lead time for the door and generator.

Can I still use it as a normal shower?

Yes. A steam shower is a shower with additional capability. The only practical difference day to day is the sealed door and the ceiling.

Does it need the same servicing as a steam room?

Yes — six-monthly descaling. The generator is smaller but UAE water is just as hard, and a small element scales just as fast as a large one.
