Turkish hammam construction in Dubai
A hammam is not a steam room with marble in it. The defining element is the göbektaşı — the heated navel stone in the centre of the room — and the underfloor circuit that keeps a large slab of marble at body-comfortable temperature indefinitely. Get that wrong and you have an expensive cold stone in a warm room.
These are the most technically demanding rooms we build. The heating circuit, the stone selection, the domed or vaulted ceiling and the drainage all have to be designed together, before any tiling starts. It is also the category where we most often get called in to fix somebody else's work.
What the build involves
The göbektaşı and its heating circuit
The central slab sits on a screed containing a hydronic or electric heating circuit, insulated beneath so the heat travels upward rather than into the structure. Marble is dense and slow, so the circuit is sized to hold temperature continuously rather than to heat quickly. The stone should sit around 40–42°C — warm enough to lie on for half an hour, never hot enough to be uncomfortable against bare skin.
Stone selection
Marble is traditional and correct, but not every marble suits a hammam. Highly porous stones stain from body oils and soap, and some varieties craze under repeated thermal cycling. We specify low-porosity marble or a dense limestone, sealed with a penetrating sealer rather than a surface coating, which would peel.
The ceiling
A domed or barrel-vaulted ceiling is not decoration — it is what stops condensation dripping. In a room at 100% humidity, a curved ceiling sends every drop to the perimeter. Traditional hammams pierce the dome with small glass oculi; in a villa we usually do the same with fibre-optic points, which gives the effect without the waterproofing risk.
Kurna basins and drainage
Wall-mounted kurna basins with hot and cold taps, filled and poured by hand, are what makes the room a hammam rather than a wet room. Each needs a supply and each contributes to the floor water volume, so the floor gradient and gutter capacity are designed around the number of basins, not just the room area.

Stone is the largest single line, and the range within marble is enormous — a straightforward white marble and a book-matched statuario can differ by a factor of four for the same room. The second largest is the dome, because forming and waterproofing a curved ceiling is slow work. The heating circuit itself is a relatively small part of the total.

The two get confused constantly. If you want to lie on warm stone, you want a hammam. If you want a room for black soap and kessa glove treatments, you want a Moroccan bath room.

How much does a Turkish hammam cost in Dubai?
A compact villa hammam runs AED 90,000 to 150,000. With a formed dome and two kurna basins, AED 150,000 to 220,000. Spa and hotel installations start around AED 220,000. Retrofitting a heated göbektaşı slab into an existing wet room is AED 55,000 to 90,000.
What is a gobektasi?
The heated marble platform in the centre of a hammam, sometimes translated as the navel stone. Bathers lie on it while the heat works through, and scrub treatments are carried out on it. It is heated from below by a circuit in the screed and held at around 40 to 42°C.
How long does hammam construction take?
Twelve to twenty weeks. Stone lead times, dome forming and the sequence of waterproofing then screed then stone all take time that cannot be compressed safely.
Does the hammam have to stay switched on?
Effectively yes. A marble slab takes four to eight hours to reach temperature from cold, so hammams are designed to hold temperature continuously with a setback rather than to be switched on for an evening. Running cost is lower than people expect because holding temperature takes far less energy than reaching it.
Can a hammam go in a villa basement?
It is one of the better locations, because basements have the ceiling height for a dome and the structure to carry the stone. The main checks are drainage — you may need a pumped connection — and ventilation.
Do you do hammams for hotels and spas?
Yes. Commercial installations differ mainly in drainage capacity, treatment throughput and the durability specification on the stone, which sees far heavier use than a villa hammam.
