Undersized steam generators are the most common specification error in this market, and the reason is simple: people size on floor area. Steam fills volume, and volume includes ceiling height. A room with a 2.8 metre ceiling needs meaningfully more generator than the same footprint at 2.2 metres.

The second factor almost everyone misses is the tile. A steam room finished in marble or thick porcelain has enormous thermal mass, and the generator has to heat all of it before the air holds temperature. Two identical rooms, one in ceramic and one in stone, can need generators two sizes apart.

What the build involves

Sizing method

Room volume in cubic metres, multiplied by a factor for the finish — around 1.0 for ceramic, 1.3 for large-format porcelain, 1.6 to 2.0 for natural stone. Add capacity for external walls and any glass. A 3 by 2 by 2.4 metre room in porcelain lands at 9 to 12kW. The same room in marble can need 15kW.

Location and access

The generator needs a ventilated position within about 10 metres of the room, with a water feed, a drain for its flush cycle, and physical access for descaling. Building it into a sealed void where it cannot be reached is a decision that costs money at every single service for the life of the room.

Water treatment for UAE mains

This is the single most useful thing you can do for generator life here. Mains water in the UAE is hard, and scale builds on the heating element fast. A softened or filtered feed, combined with six-monthly descaling, typically takes a generator from four or five years to eight or ten. The softener costs a fraction of a replacement generator.

Controls, dosing and drainage

Digital control outside the room, auto-flush after each session, aromatherapy dosing pumped rather than dripped into the steam line, and chromotherapy if wanted. The auto-flush matters — a generator that sits full of hot mineral-laden water between sessions scales far faster than one that empties itself.

A like-for-like replacement is quick and predictable. Where the original was undersized — which is common — going up a size may need a larger circuit and sometimes a larger water feed, and that work often exceeds the cost of the generator. We check both before quoting.

How much does a steam generator cost in Dubai?

A 6 to 9kW unit is AED 5,500 to 11,000 supply only. A 9 to 15kW unit is AED 11,000 to 22,000. Replacement supplied and fitted runs AED 9,000 to 28,000 depending on whether the electrical supply needs upgrading.

Where should the generator be installed?

How long does a steam generator last?

Eight to ten years with a treated water feed and six-monthly descaling. Four to five years without. UAE mains water is hard enough that this difference is dramatic, and the cost of a softener is a small fraction of a replacement.

Why has my steam generator stopped producing steam?

The usual causes, in order of frequency: a scaled element, a failed water inlet valve, a blocked drain valve holding the tank in fault, or a tripped thermal cutout. All four are repairable. Most units we are called to have simply never been descaled.

Do you replace generators in rooms built by other companies?

Yes, regularly. Send a photo of the existing unit's rating plate and the room dimensions and we will confirm what fits and whether the original was sized correctly in the first place.
