How sauna sizing works
Bench run decides capacity, not floor area
A seated adult needs about 550 mm of bench width. Capacity is therefore a function of how much bench you can run around the walls, which is why an L-shaped layout in a square room seats more than a single long bench in a corridor-shaped one of the same area.
Bench geometry
Upper bench roughly 1.1 metres below the ceiling, so a seated adult's head sits in the hot layer. Lower bench about 400 mm below the upper. Depth of 500 mm for seating, 600 mm if anyone will lie down. Slats spaced 8 mm apart for airflow, fixed from underneath so no fixing head can touch skin.
Ceiling height between 2.0 and 2.2 metres
Below 2.0 the upper bench becomes uncomfortable. Above 2.2 you are paying to heat air nobody sits in, permanently. If the room is taller, drop a false ceiling inside the cabin — it is far cheaper than the larger heater you would otherwise be committed to.
Leave the heater its clearance
Manufacturers specify minimum distances from heater to bench, wall and guard rail. They are a fire requirement and a warranty condition, not a suggestion. In a compact cabin this genuinely constrains the layout and is the reason very small cabins sometimes take a smaller heater than volume alone suggests.
Door swing
Sauna doors open outward, always, with no lock — so nobody can be trapped by someone slumped against the inside. That needs 700 mm of clear swing space outside the cabin, which is easy to forget when squeezing a cabin into an alcove.

What size sauna do I need for 4 people?
About 1.5 by 2.0 metres of internal floor with a 2.1 metre ceiling and benches on two walls. That is the most common domestic size and generally the best value per square metre.
What is the smallest practical sauna?
Roughly 1.2 by 1.5 metres for two seated people with 2.0 metres of headroom. Below that the heater's clearance zone starts consuming the usable floor.
How deep should sauna benches be?

How much space do I need outside the cabin?
