Most sauna heater problems are sizing problems wearing a disguise. A unit that is too small never quite reaches temperature and runs flat out until its elements fail early. A unit that is too large overshoots, cycles hard, and cooks the timber immediately around it. Neither presents as a sizing fault — they present as a heater that broke.

What the build involves

Sizing on volume, with corrections

The starting point is 1kW per cubic metre of cabin. Then you add capacity for glass — every square metre of glazing behaves roughly like an extra cubic metre of volume — and for any uninsulated masonry wall inside the cabin. A 2.0 by 1.8 by 2.1 metre cabin is 7.6 cubic metres, so around 8kW; add a glass front and you are at 9kW.

Electric, wood-fired and infrared

Electric is the default and suits almost every villa and apartment here. Wood-fired is possible in outdoor cabins but needs a flue, a clearance zone and usually community approval, so it is rare in Dubai. Infrared is a different technology entirely — radiant panels at 45–60°C rather than heated air — and it is the practical answer where board capacity is limited.

Stones, and why they matter

Heater stones are consumable. They fracture over time, pack down, and restrict airflow through the element, which makes the heater work harder and shortens element life. Peridotite or olivine, loosely stacked so air moves through, replaced every one to two years in domestic use and annually in commercial. It is a cheap job that prevents an expensive one.

Controls and safety

Digital controls mounted outside the cabin, a temperature limiter, and a timer that cannot be set beyond the safe maximum. Commercial installations need a door interlock or occupancy timeout. All of this is standard on current units and worth insisting on when replacing an older heater.

Replacement pricing depends heavily on whether the existing electrical supply is adequate for the new unit. Like-for-like swaps are quick. Going up a size often means a new circuit, and that is usually the larger part of the cost rather than the heater itself.

If board capacity allows an electric heater, most people prefer it. Infrared exists as the practical answer where it does not.

Questions we get asked most

What size sauna heater do I need?

Roughly 1kW per cubic metre of cabin volume, plus about 1kW for every square metre of glass. A 7.6 cubic metre cabin needs around 8kW; the same cabin with a glass front needs 9kW. Ceiling height counts, which is why floor area alone gives the wrong answer.

Which sauna heater brand is best?

Harvia and Tylö are the two we fit most and both are reliable with good parts availability in the UAE. Sawo is a strong value option. EOS and Helo are excellent but parts lead times are longer here. Parts availability matters more than brand prestige when something fails in year six.

Can you replace a heater in a sauna you did not build?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Send a photo of the rating plate and one of the cabin interior and we will confirm what fits and whether your existing circuit supports it.

How often should sauna stones be replaced?

Every one to two years for home use, annually for gyms and hotels. Fractured stones pack down and restrict airflow through the element, which shortens heater life significantly. It is an inexpensive job that prevents an expensive one.

Do I need three phase for a sauna?

Not for a 6kW heater, which runs on a dedicated 32A single phase circuit. From 9kW upward you generally do. Villas commonly have three phase available; apartments usually do not, which is often the deciding factor between a traditional and an infrared cabin.

Can I install a wood-fired sauna heater in Dubai?

In an outdoor cabin, sometimes — it needs a compliant flue, a clearance zone and community approval, and many developments will not permit it. Most outdoor cabins here end up electric for that reason.
