Warm-up is most of the cost

A heater draws its full rating while bringing the cabin up to temperature. Once there it cycles, drawing perhaps a third of its rating in a well-insulated sauna. For a typical 8kW cabin, warm-up accounts for well over half the energy of a session — which is why insulation quality shows up on your bill rather than only in comfort.

Duty cycle by room type

A traditional sauna cycles at roughly 35 percent once at temperature. A steam generator sits nearer 55 percent, because steam is condensing continuously and has to be replaced. Infrared runs at about 75 percent, since the panels stay on throughout — but at 2kW rather than 8kW, so the total is still lower.

The DEWA slab tariff

Dubai residential electricity is charged in slabs, roughly 0.23 AED per kWh at the lowest consumption band rising to about 0.38 at the highest. A villa running air conditioning is almost certainly in the top slab, so a sauna's units are charged at the top rate. Adjust the field to whatever your own bill shows.

Servicing is the part people forget

A sauna needs an annual service at AED 850 to 1,600 and stones every one to two years. A steam room needs descaling twice a year at AED 1,200 to 2,200 a visit — and in UAE water skipping it means replacing the generator in year three instead of year ten, which dwarfs every other figure on this page.

What actually reduces running cost

Ceiling height, first: heating air above head height is pure waste and dropping a false ceiling to 2.1 metres often saves a heater size permanently. Then insulation quality and vapour barrier integrity, which determine how fast heat leaks out. Then glass area, which looks superb and costs you every session.
