Portable steam room vs a built-in steam room
Portable steam options run from a fold-up fabric tent with a small electric boiler at one end, up to a moulded acrylic steam cabin that plugs into a socket. They cost a fraction of a built-in room, and for some people they are genuinely the right answer.
We build the expensive version, so read this with that in mind. But we would rather someone spend AED 1,500 sensibly than AED 40,000 on something they use twice.
What a portable unit actually gives you
The fabric tent type seals around your neck with your head outside, which changes the experience fundamentally — the point of a steam room for most people is breathing the warm moist air. If congestion relief is your goal, a tent does not deliver it.
Moulded acrylic steam cabins are closer to the real thing. They are a sealed enclosure with a small generator, usually plugging into a standard socket, and they do produce a genuine steam environment. The compromises are size, a plastic interior, noticeably slower heat-up, and small generators that struggle to hold saturation.
The cost gap, plainly
A fabric steam tent is a few hundred dirhams to around AED 2,000. A moulded acrylic steam cabin runs roughly AED 6,000 to 20,000 depending on size and specification.
A steam shower conversion starts around AED 22,000, and a built-in tiled steam room AED 35,000. The gap is real, and it buys durability, size, proper saturation and a room that adds value to the property rather than occupying floor space.
Where portable makes sense
You are renting, and installing anything permanent is not an option.
You want to find out whether you actually like steam bathing before committing AED 40,000. This is the argument we make most often — a year with an acrylic cabin tells you a great deal about whether the built-in room will get used.
You need it in a room you might reconfigure, or you move frequently.
Where portable disappoints
Longevity. Acrylic cabins with small generators are consumer appliances, and three to five years is a realistic expectation rather than a pessimistic one.
Capacity. Almost all are single-occupant, and shoulder room is tight.
Saturation. Small generators fed from a domestic socket cannot hold 100 percent humidity in the way a properly sized unit can, so the experience is noticeably milder.
Appearance. A moulded plastic cabin in a bathroom is what it looks like, and it does nothing for the property.
A middle route worth knowing about
If you have an existing shower enclosure that can be sealed, a steam shower conversion is the cheapest permanent option and often costs less than people assume — particularly if the bathroom's waterproofing already runs full height.
Before assuming you have to choose between a plastic cabin and a AED 40,000 room, it is worth having someone open one small section of your existing tanking to see which category you are actually in.
If you decide to build instead
Steam shower conversions are the step up most people take from a portable cabin, because the enclosure and drainage already exist. Built-in steam room installation is the full version, with the tanking and the room size to match.
