Home steam room: what it costs and what it takes
A home steam room in Dubai runs between AED 22,000 and AED 95,000 installed, and where you land inside that range depends almost entirely on one thing: whether the space is already a wet area.
Everything else — tile choice, generator size, glass, controls — moves the number far less than the waterproofing does.
The four price bands
Steam shower conversion, AED 22,000 to 45,000. Converting an existing shower enclosure. Uses the drain and falls you already have. Four to six weeks.
Standard tiled steam room in porcelain, AED 35,000 to 58,000. A 1.5 by 2.0 metre room seating two or three. Eight to ten weeks.
Steam room in natural stone, AED 58,000 to 95,000. Larger, and stone needs a bigger generator because of its thermal mass. Ten to fourteen weeks.
Creating a wet room where none existed sits at the top of whichever band applies, because new drainage and falls are real construction.
What actually drives the cost
Tanking. The liquid membrane, the taped corners, the detailing around every penetration — this is the layer that has to survive twenty years of daily saturation and it is where the money goes.
Drainage. If there is a working drain in roughly the right place with a fall to it, you are in good shape. If not, forming falls and running new drainage is the single biggest variable in a home steam room quote.
Tile. Natural stone costs more as a material and forces a larger generator. Porcelain is the pragmatic middle. Ceramic is cheapest and needs the smallest unit.
What the space needs
A minimum of about 1.0 by 1.2 metres for a usable single-person room, 1.5 by 2.0 metres for two or three. Ceiling height between 2.1 and 2.4 metres — higher wastes generator capacity heating air nobody sits in.
Somewhere ventilated within about ten metres for the generator, with a water feed, a drain and genuine access for descaling. This is the item most often left until too late in the design.
Apartment or villa
Villas are straightforward: usually adequate electrical capacity, existing drainage in bathrooms, and only a developer or community NOC to obtain.
Apartments are more constrained. Building management may be cautious about work affecting waterproofing, board capacity for the generator can be tight, and the NOC process is longer. A steam shower conversion is usually the approvable route where a new wet room would not be.
Before you commit, check these
Whether the existing waterproofing runs full height or stops at shoulder height. Shoulder height is adequate for a shower and inadequate for steam, and extending it means removing tile.
Whether your distribution board has a spare way for the generator circuit.
Where the generator will live, and whether you can physically reach it in two years to descale it.
Whether a softener can be fitted on the feed. In UAE water this roughly doubles generator life and costs a fraction of a replacement.
