Steam rooms explained

What is a steam room and how does it work?

A steam room is a sealed, waterproofed room held at around 43 to 46°C with humidity at 100 percent. A generator boils water and pipes steam in continuously, so the air holds all the moisture it possibly can.

That last part is what makes it feel hot despite a temperature roughly half a sauna's. Sweat cannot evaporate in saturated air, so the heat has nowhere to go.

What the generator actually does

The generator is a tank with a heating element, sitting in a cupboard or service void within about ten metres of the room. It boils water and sends steam through an insulated line to an outlet — the steam head — mounted low on a wall away from where anyone sits, because the plume leaving it is well above 100°C.

It cycles rather than running flat out. A sensor in the room reports temperature back to the control panel, and the generator tops up saturation as steam condenses on the walls, ceiling and on you. That is why generator sizing matters so much: an undersized unit never stops running and never quite gets there.

Why the room has to be built differently

Saturated air condenses on every surface, continuously, for as long as the room is running. That water has to be contained and drained rather than allowed into the structure.

So the room is tanked: a liquid waterproof membrane over the substrate, taken up every wall and reinforced with tape at corners and around any penetration, then tiled over. The floor falls to a drain. The door is a purpose-made sealed unit rather than a shower screen. Get any of that wrong and the water appears as damp in the room behind.

The sloped ceiling, which people always ask about

Condensation forms on the coldest surface in the room, which is the ceiling. On a flat ceiling it collects until droplets fall — cold, straight down, onto whoever is sitting below.

A fall of at least 3 degrees toward a wall sends the condensate sideways where it runs down harmlessly. It costs nothing to specify at framing stage and cannot be retrofitted into a finished tiled room without demolition.

What it is not

Not a sauna. A sauna is dry heat at 80 to 100°C in a timber cabin with no waterproofing.

Not a steam shower, quite. A steam shower is the same idea in a smaller sealed shower enclosure, and it is the cheaper route because it uses drainage and falls that already exist.

Not a Turkish hammam. A hammam runs cooler with a heated marble slab at its centre, and the stone is the whole point of the room.

What it needs to run

A dedicated electrical circuit sized to the generator, a water feed, and a drain for the automatic flush cycle. In the UAE it also wants a softened or filtered feed, because mains water here is hard enough to scale a heating element within months.

Ongoing, it needs descaling every six months. That single item is the difference between a generator lasting eight to ten years and one failing in year three.

If you are thinking about building one

Steam room installation covers the tanking, falls and ceiling form in detail, and steam generator sizing and supply explains the calculation that decides whether the room ever works properly.

Where space or budget is tight, steam shower conversions do most of the same job in an enclosure you already have. We handle sauna and steam room installation in Dubai and across the northern emirates.

Questions we get asked most

How hot is a steam room?

Around 43 to 46°C, roughly half a sauna's temperature. It feels hotter because humidity sits at 100 percent and sweat cannot evaporate.

How long does a steam room take to fill?

Ten to fifteen minutes from cold for a correctly sized generator. If yours takes more than twenty, the generator is probably undersized rather than faulty.

Where does the steam generator go?

In a ventilated cupboard or service void within about ten metres of the room, with a water feed, a drain and real access for descaling. Never seal it into a void.

Do steam rooms use a lot of water?

Less than people expect. The generator boils a small tank continuously rather than flowing water. The larger consumable is electricity for the element.
