Why your steam generator stopped making steam
Four faults cover the large majority of the steam generator callouts we attend, and in most cases the underlying cause is the same one: the unit has never been descaled.
Here is how to tell them apart, what is safe to check yourself, and what is not.
1. A scaled element — the most common by a distance
Symptoms: steam output weakened gradually over months rather than stopping suddenly. Longer to reach temperature. The unit runs constantly. Eventually a thermal cutout trips and it stops entirely.
Cause: UAE mains water is hard, and scale builds on the element within months. A coated element cannot transfer heat into the water efficiently, so it runs hotter and hotter until it either fails or trips its own protection.
Fix: descale and inspect. If the element has already failed, replacement is AED 2,200 to 6,500 including parts and labour.
2. A failed water inlet valve
Symptoms: sudden rather than gradual. The unit powers up, the display looks normal, but no steam appears and the tank stays empty. Sometimes a fault code for low water.
Cause: the solenoid valve that admits water has stuck or burned out. Scale contributes here too, since debris carried from a scaled tank fouls the seat.
Fix: valve replacement, AED 1,600 to 4,800 with parts. Straightforward for an engineer, not a DIY job — it is a live electrical component on a plumbed connection.
3. A stuck drain or flush valve
Symptoms: the unit sits in fault and will not start. Or it runs but the tank never empties after a session, and scaling accelerates noticeably.
Cause: the automatic flush valve has seized, usually with scale. This is the fault that causes other faults — a tank standing full of hot mineral-laden water between sessions scales several times faster than one that empties.
Fix: valve service or replacement. Worth doing promptly, because leaving it guarantees the element fails next.
4. A tripped thermal cutout
Symptoms: the unit was working, then stopped, and there is no power to the heating circuit even though the supply is live.
Cause: usually a secondary symptom of one of the three above — the element overheated because it was scaled, or ran dry because the inlet valve failed. Occasionally a genuine control fault.
Fix: never simply reset it and carry on. The cutout did its job; something made it operate, and resetting without diagnosis means it will trip again or the element will fail properly.
What you can safely check yourself
Is the circuit breaker on and is there power at the isolator.
Is the water supply to the generator open — an isolating valve closed during other plumbing work is a genuinely common cause.
Is there a fault code on the control panel, and what does the manual say it means.
Is the steam head blocked with scale or with cleaning product residue.
That is the safe list. Anything involving opening the unit means a live electrical component on a plumbed water connection at over 100°C, and it is not a sensible place to learn.
What to send when you call
A photograph of the rating plate, which gives make, model and kW rating. A photograph of any fault code. The room dimensions and the tile finish. Roughly how old the unit is and when it was last descaled — if the answer is never, we already know most of the story.
With those we can usually bring the right part to the first visit rather than making two.
Repair or replace
Under about six years with a treated water feed: repair, almost always.
Over eight years, never descaled, on untreated mains water: replacement is usually the better spend, because the tank and valves are as tired as the element.
If the original was undersized for the room, replacement is the moment to correct it — but check whether the larger unit needs a bigger circuit or water feed before ordering, because that work can exceed the cost of the generator.
